• The Happy Uncles is tucked away at The Spice Yard, opposite a scrap yard in Salt River. It’s the hidden gem you could easily miss if you’re passing through, but once discovered, it leaves a lasting impression.

Upon entering, you’re greeted by a cosy, dimly lit space reminiscent of a loft, with its exposed brick walls adding to the modern and rustic fine dining ambiance. The understated charm of The Happy Uncles mirrors the subtle yet delightful flavours found throughout the menu.

Here, the balance between presentation and taste is spot on, ensuring every dish is both visually appealing and delicious. It’s a bit off the beaten path from the city centre, but a quick Uber ride makes it easily accessible. Prepare to leave with a satisfied stomach and a contented heart.

Fine-dining and halaal rarely intersect, but The Happy Uncles is a pioneering first for Cape Town.

Located in Salt River’s semi-industrial, urban renewal district, this chic open-plan restaurant is the brainchild of chef Anwar Abdullatief, along with co-owners Riedaa Manie and Fuad de Vries.

Originally a production kitchen catering for events, it transformed into a fine-dining spot in early 2022.

Anwar, having honed his skills at Cavalli, Jordan, Siba’s Restaurant, and Rupert & Rothschild, brings his fine dining expertise to The Happy Uncles in fully halaal form.

His 4-, 6-, or 8-course tasting menus feature exquisite presentation, flavour flourishes, and theatrics, all without pork or alcohol.

Enjoy beautifully plated dishes like charred broccolini with pesto, avocado, and wild mushroom tea; West Coast squid with dune spinach and smoked mussel velouté; aged beef sirloin with spiced bone marrow, and more.

Each menu includes a canapé and palate cleanser for a truly immersive fine-dining experience.

The Sea Breeze’s sweet-and-sour sauce and the green mango atchar in the squid starter elevate the dishes at The Happy Uncles.

Cape Town flavours enhance well-seasoned courses. The starters and piña colada-inspired sorbet palate cleanser are delicious, with the white chocolate marquise dessert with tart passion fruit as a perfect sweet finish.
