• After a devastating fire seven months ago, beloved local food landmark Golden Dish officially reopened its doors yesterday afternoon.

The 55-year-old beloved Cape Town eatery, Golden Dish, has sparked excitement among its loyal customers with the announcement of its grand reopening. Patrons can indulge in their favourite meals again.

According to IOL, owner Mohamed Rafiq Parker speculated that loadshedding might have caused the blaze that devastated the kitchen in the Gatesville building.

At the time of the incident, a spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Service reported that the fire had completely destroyed the rear kitchen, fortunately with no injuries or fatalities.

Parker mentioned that the restoration was covered by insurance.

‘The damage was extensive but I can’t put rand on it. The place was insured.’

‘We were saddened that the place burned down but we are grateful that no one was injured in the fire. We are happy that we are finally at this stage.’

He noted that the renovations did not include any major changes.

‘We didn’t change anything; we kept the establishment as sweet and simple and honest as it was before. The legend is back.’

‘We want to reignite our clients’ happiness. I’m ecstatic that we will be up and running again. We are in good spirits.’

Golden Dish, established in 1969, originally opened at the corner of 2nd Avenue and Klipfontein Road, directly opposite Athlone Stadium.

In 1989, the halal takeaway relocated, and by 1993 or 1994, it had settled into its current spot at Shop 1, Block 1, Gatesville Shopping Centre.

As they geared up for reopening, staff members expressed their readiness to serve customers once again.

Phakama Buti joyfully said, ‘Everyone knows that we’ve been closed for so long. We’re back on track. Come one, come all. We are happy that we are reopening after seven months.’
