• Having bid a brief farewell to pasta, pizza and wagyu burger lovers earlier this year, Cape Town’s much-loved Step Brothers Restaurant and Bar packed up their utensils in Bantry Bay and found their way to a new spot in Green Point.

Cape {town} Etc recently had the pleasure of popping in, where we indulged in the delightful Italian-inspired cuisine that has long made Step Brothers the go-to for all al dente enthusiasts.

Nestled in Green Point, the authentic Italian bistro offers a charming outdoor area – complete with a play area and feeding bowls – that’s welcoming to both kids and pets. The restaurant also features two tennis courts for guests to enjoy before or after their meal.

Catering to groups of all sizes, there are seating options both inside and out for sunshine-filled summers and cosy winter escapes.

Upon entering, we were warmly greeted by the staff, who welcomed us with big smiles. For our starters, we chose the Spicy Rock Shrimp and Grilled Halloumi. Within just 15 minutes, our dishes arrived, and they were nothing short of sensational.

The Spicy Rock Shrimp was perfectly tempura-battered, drizzled with a spicy creamy sauce, and garnished with spring onions and sesame seeds – pure perfection!

While the starters were quite satisfying on their own, we couldn’t resist ordering the ‘Myyy maaannn’ pizza and the Very Peri Chicken Pasta, given the Italian theme of the restaurant.

Both mains were absolutely delightful, and we washed them down with a refreshing virgin strawberry daiquiri and a virgin mojito, leaving our taste buds thoroughly pleased.

Feeling fully carbo-loaded, we also had the opportunity to chat with co-owner Sian Vessio, who shared more about the restaurant’s vision.

‘We are a very family-oriented restaurant; we cater to everybody, and we are halal-friendly, which allows us to serve a wider group of people,’ Vessio explained.

In fact, loyal foodies who have followed Step Brothers since their Bantry Bay days would know that all their meat is supplied by the popular halaal meat supplier LA Farms.

She also mentioned the inspiration behind the restaurant’s name. ‘My husband and I run the business, and the name actually comes from the movie Step Brothers, which is my husband’s favourite film.’

Beyond breakfast, tapas, burgers, wood-fired pizzas, al dente pasta and more, Vessio expressed that the bistro is getting ready to serve up a few more upcoming developments, including the addition of four new padel courts set to open in the next few months.

‘We are opening four padel courts next to our existing tennis courts. They should’ve been completed already, but they’ll be ready soon,’ she noted.

The two existing tennis courts are also set to see their well-deserved revamp being completed in the coming weeks, in preparation for a highly-anticipated Cape Town summer season.

Having relocated from Bantry Bay to Green Point, Vessio shared her thoughts on the new location.

‘There wasn’t anything like it in the area. The neighbourhood had the same restaurants for many years, so I believe our establishment brings something fresh to the community.

‘With the gym next door, many people stop by for a quick bite after their workout, as we open our doors early in the day,’ Vessio added.

With their long-time favourites and exciting new developments on the horizon, it’s clear that Step Brothers is poised to steal the hearts of Green Point goers, just as they had at their previous Bantry Bay location.
