• In Bloubergstrand, the picturesque seaside suburb of Cape Town City, is found the ever popular restaurant Ons Huisie, which is Afrikaans for ‘Our Small Home’. And as the name suggests, visitors to Ons Huisie will find a place where they can feel at home.

Not just a bit of history

Ons Huisie is an internationally recognised heritage site that now houses a world renowned traditional restaurant. Inside, guests will be able to experience the rich history of this house captured in photographs of its historic owners over more than 130 years, as well as in the wonderfully restored historic building which still holds its traditional character. Ons Huisie has stood through many historical events of the area, including the 1806 Battle of Blaauwberg, AKA the Battle of Cape Town. It also overlooks Robben Island, the island where former president Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 28 years. This historic house is also truly a community gem, as resident Blouberg families supplied many old photographs of the area which show the transformation of Bloubergstrand over the last two centuries.

This heritage jewel is also part of the Seascape Collection, which offers various venues for events, dining and accommodation in Western Cape. Other sites that are part of the Collection are fellow Bloubergstrand restaurant On The Rocks and the Weltenvreden Estate in Stellenbosch. Ons Huisie is recognised as one of the main tourist destinations in the Cape Peninsula, and it’s no surprise why: Ons Huisie provides visitors with spectacular views of Table Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and Robben Island, delicious West Coast cuisine, and even dog-friendly facilities.

Besides the popular signature dishes, Ons Huisie also has many other offerings. Along with their dog-friendly facilities, they also have a large children’s playground, which means that parents can enjoy their meals with friends while the little ones play in a supervised and safe play area. Ons Huisie is a top choice with all families!

Catch the picturesque sunset over the Atlantic while sipping on a cocktail or craft beer on the stoep, which also has a fire place to cosy up next to.

    What’s on the menu?

Ons Huisie has got you covered for all three meals of the day. The breakfast menu, served from 9am to 12pm, includes all the brekkie essentials, ranging from small to big meals. For the light eaters there are basic eggs and bacon, scones, or muesli with yoghurt and berry compote, and for the ravenous there are omelettes, the Ons Huisie Breakfast with eggs, grilled bacon, sautéed mushrooms, pork sausage and a hashbrown, or the Farmer’s Choice Breakfast with eggs, 125g rump steak, boerewors, baked beans and chips.

For lunch and dinner, guests are spoiled for choice with an extensive selection of West Coast sea food and traditional dishes. Start your meal with a Strandloper Mussel Pot or Karoo Poppers, before diving into the old favourites, the Beef Bobotie or Lamb Bredie. If you’re a lover of seafood, why not try the West Coast Potjie, calamari, prawns, line fish and mussels in a creamy Thai curry sauce, served with rice and a poppadum; or simply stick to the classic Fish and Chips.

    Some stellar recommendations

Ons Huisie has been host to several big personalities and enterprises. Many local and international radio stations have listed Ons Huisie as their favourite restaurants, and they have been featured on talk shows like Pasella and Top Billing. No wonder Ons Huisie is on the SA’s Top 100 restaurants list!

Renowned artists like Jan Blohm and Laurika Rauch have even written songs dedicated to Ons Huisie and Bloubergstrand. ‘Met Eish’ star Neels van Jaarsveld is a regular customer and often lists them as his favourite restaurant in the world.

Ons Huisie is not just a restaurant with a good view; it is a historic gem where friends and family (and dogs!) can feel at home and come together to enjoy a spectacular sunset – and yes, to enjoy great West Coast food, too.
