    REFRESHING…

A change is as good as a holiday, right? Well, the same is true for updating your kitchen.

We spend more time in the kitchen than we may realise. The kitchen is not just a place to make and enjoy a meal, it truly is, at the risk of sounding cliché, the heart of the home. It’s a space where children do homework, you can sit down to unwind or gather with your family and friends. It’s a space to be enjoyed, but the amount of traffic it gets means that it may quickly become worn down and the cost of giving it a facelift could mean that this is put off for longer than you would like and the space becomes outdated. Thankfully, there are ways that you can give this hardworking area a refresh without breaking the bank, and if you do, ensure that it’s with a classic piece that will look good for many years to come. Check out our tips on updating you kitchen…

    WONDERFUL WALLS

There are a number of ways that one can give kitchen walls (and any for that matter) a shake-up. A fresh coat of paint is an obvious solution. It can be done relatively quickly and offers a wide variety of colour options. As easy as a change-up with paint can be, making a change to tiles (which are more than likely in the space) could be a tad trickier. Until now that is. Stick-on tiles have recently become widely available both online and in stores, making the possibility of changing tiles easier than ever before. From plain white subway tiles to those with bright and colourful Moroccan-inspired designs, there is something to fit both your taste and budget. Not keen on doing the entire space with the stick-on tiles? Why not give it a try on the wall above your sink or your stove’s backsplash? We promise that you won’t be sorry.

    STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Storage is an extremely important part of any room, none more so than in the kitchen. Many store their kitchenwares behind closed doors, but why not put some of your most loved pieces on display? Open shelving will suit any kitchen and will allow your kitchenware to both add an extra bit of beauty to the space as well as make items easily accessible. Adding shelving is an easy task to accomplish, but nothing stops you from simply removing the doors from your existing cabinets to achieve what you’re
after. If you’re not totally on board with the thought of full exposure, you can’t go wrong with a few well places storage baskets. We’re suckers for the natural woven ones, but use what works best in your space.
Speaking of cabinets, if yours are still in a good condition and just need a slight update, consider a simple coat of paint for a quick facelift. Changing out the hardware on your existing cabinets and drawers is another solution that requires minimal effort but offers maximum impact.

    FEELING LIGHT

Changing a room’s light fixtures will instantly give the space an extra lift. Try to ensure that your lighting
fixtures fit in with the style of your kitchen. And don’t be afraid to be creative with it either – if the
cottage-core vibe is what sets your heart aglow, why not consider milk glass pendants to illuminate the space without fighting the end result?

    COUNTER ACTION

Countertops are a hardworking piece of equipment in any kitchen and the reality is that they don’t necessarily come cheap. Look at installing something that will not only work in your space now, but for a
while into the future. Glass countertops are all the rage at the moment and we can understand why. Easy to clean and sanitise it can even be placed on top of your wooden tops to help with its longevity should
you wish. While we’re here, why not consider an extra-deep sink if your space allows for it, of course. Yes, we’d all love the convenience of a dishwasher, but with load-shedding not likely to go anywhere anytime soon, we need to have a back-up, and a large sink may be the perfect solution.

    TOTALLY FLOORED

Flooring is a massive investment in any room of your home. Hardwood flooring is a great option for the space, but so are wood-look tiles that are widely available, easy to maintain and will give you a classic feel with a modern twist. Not about the wooden look? Why not consider large format porcelain or flagstone tiles for a beautiful, yet practical, option. Whatever you do, just be sure that it can withstand loads of foot traffic as well as spills and most importantly that you absolutely love it.
