The lease for The Galley, Fish Hoek’s beachfront restaurant, was sold for R350 000 a month ago, 2 October, after the previous auction, which was held in November last year, was declared invalid, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The restaurant was one of 43 properties and leases that the City of Cape Town put up for auction yesterday.
Before the auction commenced, auctioneer Stef Olivier made a ‘catalogue correction’, by stating that the restaurant covered 1 896m² instead of the advertised 1 294m², according to the False Bay Echo.
Adding to the 1 294m² area, is a 455m² play area and a 147m² outside seating area, according to Oliver.
The lease is valid for 20 years with the option to renew for 10 more years, while the monthly rental amount includes rates and taxes.
Bidding for the property opened at R100 000 and occupation of the property is 1 April 2025.
According to Olivier, Herbie and Mathea Eichel made a bid up to R150 000 whereafter Mike Townsend, the winner of the previous auction, and an ‘unknown man’ continued the bidding.
The winning bid of R350 000 went to the unknown man with bid number 531, with Townsend confirming that he did ‘not get it’.
Earlier this year, the City questioned the ‘legitimacy of the bid’ after it was revealed that Townsend had made the initial bid on behalf of the Kalk Bay Waterfront Development (KBWD), the lessor of the Harbour House building at the Kalk Bay Harbour, and not on the behalf of his own business, K2023, a subsidiary of Sweetheart of the Rodea (Pty) Ltd.
The matter was previously referred to the City’s Immovable Property Adjudication Committee (IPAC) for a decision that concluded that ‘the lease should be reauctioned’.
