• This beer, for that dish

So much beer, so little time. Here are some standout beers to try this August, paired with delicious recipes from our magazine.

    Boet Beer Lager, R198 (6-pack)

Crisp and refreshing, this well-balanced lager is light but not without complexity. There’s a hoppy bitterness on the finish, which keeps things interesting. Boet Beer Brewery is a project of Van Loveren Family Wines. You can visit the brewery at the @Four Cousins tasting room in Robertson, which is open daily and offers tours, beer pairings and a restaurant.

Pair with: Warm salad of chickpeas, fennel and crispy salami

Win! We’re giving away four Boet Beer hampers valued at R320 each. The hamper includes their range of six different beers, namely: Easy Blonde, Weiss, Pale Ale, Lager, English IPA and American Pale Ale.  Added to that each hamper will also include a beer tasting voucher for the Robertson brewery. To enter, simply complete the entry form below. Terms and conditions apply. Competition ends 31 August 2018.

    Liefmans Yell’oh On The Rocks, R174 (6-pack)

Yum. Liefmans wants you to serve this apero beer over the rocks—and they’re right, it’s utterly delicious and refreshing that way. It’s all about the pineapple flavour, scented with lime, apple, elderflower and basil.

    Pair with: Moules marinières

Aegir Extra Pale Uil, R247 (6-pack)

First off I appreciate thewordplay—an‘uil’ (pronounced ale) is the Afrikaans translation of owl; hence the owl on the label. This beer simply sings of summer and has become a Saturday afternoon staple for me. With aromatics of granadilla and guava, this brew packs a refreshing, fruity punch, with a textured bitterness and a dry finish.

P.s Quick, go down to their Noordhoek based brewery so you can taste their limited edition marshmallow stout—seriously delicious!

Pair with: Stuffed pork loin with herbs and fresh cream

Little Wolf Brewery Hoppy Wheat, R180 (6-pack)

This pale wheat ale brims with tropical fruit flavours set against a subtle malty background. Mildly bitter with bright hits of citrus, lime and gooseberries it’s not only thirst-quenching, but quite moreish too.

Pair with: Crunchy haloumi with chilli-tomato dipping sauce

Saggy Stone Brewer’s Small Batch Stout, R38.99 per can

This dark stout opens with aromas of coffee, chocolate and roasted malt. Full-bodied and creamy with a dry, coconut finish.

Pair with: Light almond-chocolate cake with dark ganache
