As the editor of Food&Home magazine, Bianca Muller has a keen eye for all things food, drink, and lifestyle. This summer, she’s sharing her must-try picks to help readers fully enjoy their sunny season. From fruity bakes to al fresco setups, Bianca’s wishlist is brimming with ideas to inspire your summer celebrations.
Here’s what she had to say in a recent chat about her summer favourites:
What dishes or ingredients are at the top of your summer wish list for readers to try this season?
This summer, I’m excited to experiment with fruity cakes and bakes. I usually gravitate toward chocolatey treats when baking, but fruity desserts have caught my eye lately, especially those on the Pies&Tacos’ blog—it’s my go-to spot for dessert inspiration.
Are there any standout wines, cocktails, or non-alcoholic drinks you’d recommend for summer celebrations?
I typically go for a margarita cocktail or a fruity mocktail, as long as it’s not too sweet — I prefer a nice tang.
If I spot a mocktail featuring one of my favourite fruits like strawberry, pineapple or granadilla, it’s an easy choice!

Do you have a favourite hidden gem or new dining spot readers should explore?
Absolutely! Here’s a list of some of my favourite eateries:
- Persian Peacock (Vredehoek)
- Four & Twenty – Cafe and Deli (Wynberg and Constantia Uitsig)
- Piza ē Vino Hartenbos (Hartenbos)
- Chocolat Bistro (Durbanville)
- Saray (Victoria & Alfred Waterfront)
- Jarryds Brunch & Bistro (Sea Point)
- Delfinos Seaside Restaurant (Mossel Bay)
- Lupa Osteria (Durbanville)
- Boathouse Sushi (Durbanville)
- Our Local (Gardens)
What kitchen gadgets or appliances are on your wishlist to make summer cooking easier and more fun?
Am I crazy for thinking of a fly fan first, lol? I honestly think every summer dinner table and kitchen counter could use one or two, as flies can be such a nuisance this time of year.
Another essential appliance for summer is a high-speed blender, perfect for making smoothies, cocktails or icy desserts. And of course, let’s not forget fruit and veggie choppers and slicers — they make prepping salads and fruit bowls so much more convenient.
Are there any summer-perfect tableware or accessories you’d suggest for hosting guests?
Wooden items bring a rustic charm that I love. Incorporate wooden elements throughout your setup — think serving platters, dip bowls, cheese boards and salad spoons or bowls.
Glasses are a simple yet effective way to create a stylish summer dining scene. With a variety of textures, shapes and colours, you can easily find the perfect pieces to match the season and your personal style.
Tablecloths and table runners are often the showstoppers — choose one that gives that summer feel!
What decor trends or essentials would you add to your wishlist for creating the perfect summer entertaining space?
Pops of colour (hello Dopamine Décor!)…
Brighten up your space with affordable, fun cushions, cheerful rugs or summery tablecloths. String lights are a must — easy on the pocket and instantly charming. Vibrant plates and glasses will elevate your setup, and a few plants bring that fresh, summer vibe.
Are there any must-have items for outdoor dining or creating a stylish al fresco setup?
Outdoor dining, to me, should not skimp on having a cosy and inviting atmosphere. Pretty umbrellas provide shade from the summer sun, while cosy throws or blankets are perfect for those who prefer sitting on the grass.
For evening dining, I would use solar lights and battery-powered options (there are so many beautiful choices). Stylish yet practical tableware is essential, ensuring it won’t topple over with a sudden breeze. And knowing me, there will always be flowers around.
What lifestyle activities or experiences are you adding to your personal summer wishlist?
I really want to get back into hiking more often. It’s something I did a lot last year and truly enjoyed, but I’ve been slacking off in 2024. It’s definitely on my 2025 bucket list — more hikes for sure! Anything in nature is something I’d love to do more of — beach days, visits to botanical gardens… And does visiting eateries count as a lifestyle activity? Because I’d love to do more of that too!
My birthday is in summer, and I like to do something a bit out of my comfort zone that I’ve been wanting to try. I’ve already ticked off paragliding and scuba diving in the Two Oceans Aquarium’s tank. I’m still deciding what 2025’s activity will be, but it’s something I always look forward to.
Do you have a wishlist of books, markets, or events that readers should enjoy this season?
I have two cookbooks I’m really fond of, and I think they’re perfect for this season: Jan Braai: The Vegetarian Option and Recipetin Eats Dinner.
I’ll definitely be making some of my favourites from these over the holiday period, and I’m really excited about it!
When it comes to markets, I honestly love them all — from small pop-ups and farmers’ markets to larger ones like Oranjezicht. I’m looking forward to popping into a few local ones in December.
With Bianca Muller’s summer wishlist as your guide, this season is sure to be a memorable one! Whether you’re whipping up fruity desserts, exploring hidden dining spots, or hosting an al fresco feast.
