• Waffles are a cornerstone of any delicious breakfast. Golden, light and wonderfully crunchy, they’re the perfect way to start your morning. The best part is that they can be customised in any way, so pile on the cream, bacon, fruit, chocolate, or anything you want!

    Basic waffles

    Serves: Makes 6 large or 12 standard-sized waffles
    Cooking Time: 15 minutes

    Ingredients

    • 300 g cake flour
    • 30 ml (2 tbsp) sugar
    • 20 ml (4 tsp) baking powder
    • pinch salt
    • 2 large eggs
    • 450 ml full-cream milk
    • 125 ml (½ cup) sunflower oil
    • butter/oil, to grease
    • maple syrup, to serve
    • icing sugar, to dust

    Preheat the waffle iron.

    Sift the dry ingredients into a large bowl. In a separate bowl or jug, whisk together the eggs, milk and oil and slowly add to the dry ingredients, whisking continuously, to form a smooth batter.

    Grease the preheated waffle iron, pour in the batter and cook until golden brown, 3 – 5 minutes. Serve with maple syrup and a dusting of icing sugar.
