Curated for the curious and creative, a hot new Cape Town eatery will be opening its doors this summer.
Located within a heritage building in the bustling and eclectic Kloof Street Neighbourhood, Upper Union is a stylish eatery that will be serving up a modern, shared-dining concept by Chef Amori Burger.
Marking MORE Family Collection’s first foray into restaurants, Upper Union sees the renowned hospitality group offering something new for the creative and the curious. An opportunity to escape, indulge and connect all around good food, fine wines and bespoke cocktails. An experience to be shared.
“We’re really looking forward to bringing a taste of MORE Family Collection’s hospitality to Cape Town’s restaurant culture. This part of Kloof Street is as exciting a neighbourhood as we could hope to be opening in, and we can’t wait to play a small part in its growing food scene,” says Robert More, custodian and CEO of MORE Family Collection.
Heading up the kitchen will be Chef Amori Burger. The talented chef has previously run the pass of the trendy Joburg restaurant Van der Linde, before she moved on to oversee the culinary program at MORE Family Collection’s Lion Sands properties.
At Upper Union the style of dining will encourage a shared experience. It’s designed to bring people together around a table, inspire conversations, and stir their curiosity to try more. Try new. And try again.
Unbridled by a singular cuisine, the globally inspired menu features indulgent dishes, split into big plates and smalls. Larger plates are served to share and are best paired with a selection of the smalls. It’s all about punchy flavours packed into hearty dishes and served potluck style.
Complimenting the culinary offering will be an interesting and intriguing cocktail menu created by the team at award winning, Just Short cocktails. The mixologists working closely with the kitchen to create a cocktail menu which aligns with the style of food. In addition, a carefully curated wine list is set to include small scale and boutique, local wineries and winemakers.
The space, designed by Caline Williams-Wynn of Artichoke Interior Design, draws on the building’s past and sees a modern take on Victorian design – utilising a colour palette of emerald, black and white with textures of oak wood, slate, brass and marble to great effect.
An array of local makers and artisans were brought on board to custom create a plethora of the design elements – from the one-of-a-kind mosaic ‘carpet’ at the entrance and the Victorian-inspired stained-glass windows to the hand-painted custom commissioned tiles which cover the venue’s five fireplace chimneys.
Underlying all that MORE Family Collection do is their dedication to hospitality and people, an ethos which will be upheld by Upper Union too. Each member of staff is a part of the family and plays an integral role in bringing this curious and creative experience to life. Every attempt is made to ensure guests are welcomed into the fold too, feeling comfortable, relaxed and valued within this one-of-a-kind community.
At Upper Union it’s all about encouraging connection, conviviality and sparking curiosity.
A space to meet, a space to explore and most importantly a space to spend just a bit more time together – talking, laughing, eating and drinking.
