All you need is a wooden chopping board, a block of your favourite butter (at room temp), chilli oil, lemon zest, honey, nuts for crunch, edible flowers, and your choice of fresh bread. Start by laying down your parchment paper, then generously smear with room temperature butter, drizzle with chilli oil and honey, sprinkle with lemon zest and top with your choice of crushed nuts – I like them roasted. Lastly, decorate with your edible flowers and there you have it! A gorgeous snack board that took only moments to make. Once you’ve got the shot (yes, I know you’ll be taking pictures) serve with slices of your favourite, fresh bread.

Don’t limit yourself. Play around. There are so many different variations to butter board toppings online (surprisingly, vegan options too) that could potentially unlock new snacking realms for you. Some people do go to extremes, though (no thanks, I won’t be smoking my butter with hickory pellets or black tea) but you do you!
If you’re not a big butter fan, some people have come up with alternatives like yoghurt, or cream cheese.

Ultimately, is the butter board worth the hype? I’d say so. This is a great alternative to forking out hundreds of rands on a charcuterie board. There’s less variety, of course, but who doesn’t love butter? There are few things greater than enjoying a freshly baked bread served with real butter. I’m all in.
