The upcoming HalaalGoods Market (HGM) will change South Africans’ perception of halaal food. From Bao Buns to Korean kimchi, mouthwatering smashburgers to fried ice cream, and from baklava to delectable nutella chapatis, South Africa’s first artisanal halaal food and design market is redefining the halaal experience.
Beyond food, it showcases locally made clothing, offers kids’ craft play areas, and even features a comedy show as part of its vibrant lineup. According to HGM founder Fehmida Jordaan, “HGM represents and celebrates the diversity of Muslim communities in South Africa and around the world.”
Jordaan takes pride in the market’s inclusivity, welcoming people from all cultures and religions. HGM boasts a curated selection of culturally diverse vendors from across South Africa, with over half of them being female-owned businesses. While the market adheres to an Islamic ethos, it’s open to enthusiastic foodies of all backgrounds. The market is family-friendly, featuring ample seating areas, entertaining comedy shows suitable for families, engaging kids’ craft activities, and a dedicated play space for tweens and teens, complete with arcade games and foosball.
Inspired by both local artisanal markets and the global street-food scene, HGM was founded by Jordaan six years ago. Jordaan’s primary goal is to champion and uplift small, distinctive local businesses and a diverse range of halaal food establishments. As she puts it, “These businesses are the lifeblood of our economy, providing employment opportunities.”
