During my recent trip to George, I had the pleasure of visiting some of the country’s finest avocado farms and experiencing this budding trend firsthand.
My avocado adventure kicked off at Groot Brak Avos, where Dr. Guy Witney provided a guided tour of the nursery. This introduction offered fascinating insights into the meticulous process of growing avocado trees from seedlings, a labour of love that takes years of dedication. The lush fields, set against the backdrop of the picturesque Groot Brak district, immediately highlighted why this region is perfect for avocado farming—its temperate climate and fertile soil create ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality avocados.
Next up was Wolwedraai Boerdery, run by Director Louis Vorster, where I experienced a “fruit-to-shed” tour. Here, visitors can witness the avocado’s journey from tree to packaging, gaining an understanding of the harvesting, sorting, and distribution process. Standing in the middle of this thriving avocado farm, I could truly appreciate how much effort goes into bringing these fruits to market.
Why avocado farms are becoming tourist hotspots
There’s something inherently satisfying about visiting a farm and seeing where your food comes from. Avocado farms, in particular, offer a unique experience because they allow visitors to see the full life cycle of a fruit that has become such a staple in modern diets. At the Groot Brak nursery, for instance, watching tiny seedlings slowly transform into fruit-bearing trees gave me a newfound respect for the farming process.
