• In the heart of Hermanus, Only Specials Café stands as a testament to both exceptional coffee and heartfelt compassion, as owner Joke Gonggrijp’s dream transforms into a nurturing ground where youngsters with disabilities gain valuable skills through a unique two-year training program.

Joke Gonggrijp, known for successful restaurants Ficks and Dutchies in Hermanus, takes a unique approach with Only Specials Café, setting it apart through its partnership with The Sluyter Foundation. Joke was inspired by the inclusive initiatives in her homeland.

‘In the Netherlands, these types of initiatives are heavily subsidised by the government, but unfortunately, that is not the case here.’

Only Specials also hosts events, workshops, and discussions to promote understanding and acceptance of individuals with disabilities.

The patterned floors and charming garden give Only Specials the ambiance of a French café.

Inside, plants hang from the ceiling, and white French doors lead to a tree-shaded courtyard with a small herb and vegetable garden tended by the trainees.

Blue and green eucalyptus leaves painted on the walls symbolise protection, reflecting Joke’s commitment to providing a supportive and secure space for the community to thrive.

The menu features classic café fare such as sandwiches, salads, soups, and cakes. A standout is the slow-cooked pulled beef sandwich with caramelised onions, cheese, and homemade BBQ sauce on ciabatta. Desserts include tiramisu, chocolate brownies, and the cake of the day.
