Durban’s vibrant restaurant scene has bid farewell to one of its most notable establishments.
Wish on Florida, once a go-to destination for trendy dining and nightlife, permanently closed its doors in April 2023. The restaurant, which had become a staple on Florida Road since its opening in 2019, faced an irreversible decline in business, ultimately leading to its shutdown.
For years, Wish on Florida was a hotspot for both locals and tourists looking for a lively dining experience. Known for its stylish interior, carefully curated menu, and connection to the entertainment industry, the restaurant carved a special place in Durban’s food scene. With a menu that blended contemporary flavours with a touch of elegance, it was a favourite for everything from brunches to late-night gatherings.
The aftermath of unforeseen events
In the wake of a tragic incident that occurred outside the restaurant in February 2023, Wish on Florida initially closed its doors temporarily. However, the impact on the business proved to be more profound than expected. In an announcement made via social media, co-owner and Durban entrepreneur Philani Kweyama revealed that the restaurant’s brand equity had been significantly affected, making it difficult to continue operations.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the imminent closure of Wish on Florida, effective April 10, 2023,” read the statement. “Despite our best efforts, the downturn in business left us with no other choice but to close permanently.”
Before officially closing, Wish on Florida expressed gratitude to the Durban community for its unwavering support over the years. The restaurant acknowledged its patrons, partners, and suppliers who contributed to making it a beloved name in the city’s dining culture. To mark the closure, the restaurant hosted a farewell event aptly titled “The Last Supper,” allowing loyal customers to enjoy one final evening at the iconic establishment.
A new chapter on Florida Road
While Wish on Florida’s closure marked the end of an era, it wasn’t the final chapter for its owners. In July 2024, Kweyama introduced a new dining concept, Maison, on Florida Road. Inspired by Mediterranean cuisine, Maison offers a fresh take on contemporary dining with a menu featuring pastas, seafood, and flame-grilled meats infused with a South African flair. The new restaurant also hosts live music and seasonal celebrations, bringing a renewed sense of vibrancy to the area.

Though Wish on Florida may be no more, its legacy as a stylish and beloved Durban eatery remains. For those who cherished its atmosphere and culinary offerings, the memories will live on, while a new era begins at Maison.
