• Have you ever heard of Stellenbosch-by-the-Sea? It’s not an official name, but rather a term coined by the Vergenoegd Löw team to define the estate’s unique location at the gateway to the winelands of Stellenbosch.

Visitors to Vergenoegd Löw quickly discover what makes the estate’s setting so inimitable. Its close proximity to False Bay (less than 5km) has a significant cooling impact on the vineyards. Here, the temperature can be at least 3°C lower than elsewhere in the Stellenbosch region. And there’s no denying, you can taste the effect it has on the wines. It lends them freshness, restraint and a beautiful balance. Add to that a hallmark salinity, setting apart the award-winning wines made by talented young winemaker, Vusi Dalicuba.

When you arrive at Vergenoegd Löw, you get the chance to step into another universe – a quiet haven that blends heritage, luxury, and sustainability.

A decade-long journey of restoration and revitalisation has transformed this historic estate into a world-class destination that invites visitors to relax and reset. Under the ownership of Prof Dr Dr Peter Löw, a German entrepreneur and heritage specialist, Vergenoegd Löw has become a true gem in the Cape winelands.

    A Legacy Restored

With a history dating back to 1696, Vergenoegd Löw is one of South Africa’s oldest working farms, making it a treasure trove of cultural and historical significance. Prof Dr Dr Löw, with his deep appreciation for heritage preservation, acquired the estate in 2015, recognising the value it held.

The restoration process has been an intricate one, ensuring that the estate remains a living testament to its heritage while embracing the luxuries of contemporary life. Every corner of the estate tells a story – whether through the meticulously maintained Cape Dutch architecture, the regeneration of vineyards, or the carefully curated culinary experiences that honour the land and its history.

Talking about culinary excellence, Vergenoegd Löw features two top restaurants. There’s Clara’s Barn, for lunch or supper, that offers formal, five-course dining. Much of the locally grown seasonal produce is sourced from the farm or small suppliers nearby. The dishes reflect the Cape’s local cultural and social history through the eyes of Stellenbosch supremo Bertus Basson and his on-site acclaimed colleague Drikus Brink. Geuwels is their casual small-plate eatery that offers breakfast and lunch.

    Wine with a Story

At the heart of Vergenoegd Löw is its commitment to producing exceptional wines that reflect the estate’s unique terroir. The vineyards, which have been replanted after extensive soil analysis, are grown regeneratively in a mixed-farm environment. Indian Runner ducks, Dohne Merino sheep and Dexter cattle are integral to the farm’s integrated pest management programme, as they munch on the weeds and fertilise the soils naturally.

Each of the wines made here, in its own way reflects a respect for heritage and for traditional ways of farming, for better vineyard health and sustainability. But, infused with fresh, dynamic and progressive thinking. By letting nature take the lead in the vineyards, winemaker Vusi and the team can give the grapes centre stage in the cellar. Their way is to stand back to let the grapes guide them.

The full range of wines by Vergenoegd Löw can be sampled on the estate across a variety of carefully restored Cape Dutch heritage venues – in and around the 1773 Homestead.

For a unique option, try the Indigenous Tasting that showcases wines in a whole new light. Six wines from the range are presented with a selection of intriguing local flavours like bokkoms (salt-cured dried fish), biltong (spice-cured dried meat), amasi (fermented milk similar to buttermilk), herbs and spices. The selection is served with roosterkoek (griddle cake).
