The iconic pink hotel redefines outdoor dining with two new vibrant culinary offerings: The Fountain by Planet Bar and Saturday Braai.
Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, remains a beacon of slow luxury. At 125 years old, The Nellie continues to evolve, seamlessly blending its storied history with fresh, contemporary experiences. This summer, the hotel unveils two exciting outdoor dining destinations that celebrate South Africa’s diverse flavours and beyond: The Fountain by Planet Bar and Saturday Braai.
Guiding this evolution is Executive Chef Luke Lawrence Barry, whose culinary philosophy honours authenticity, celebrates local ingredients, and embraces the joy of sharing food with those you love.
The Fountain by Planet Bar
Picture a leisurely lunch stretching into a relaxed dinner in a lush garden oasis. This is The Fountain by Planet Bar, a vibrant alfresco dining spot where Mediterranean-inspired dishes meet locally sourced South African ingredients. Surrounded by ancient trees and colourful blooms, the atmosphere invites a casual, yet refined, experience.
Whether you’re dropping by spontaneously or gathering with friends, every visit to The Fountain promises moments of effortless indulgence. Start with antipasti and a refreshing Negroni Spritz, and allow your meal to unfold from there.
The menu includes standouts like Zuney Wagyu bone marrow, Cape burrata, house-made charcuterie, and artisanal cheeses from nearby Wild Peacock. Indulge in Nonna-style pork and beef meatballs, West Coast prawn scampi, Saldanha Bay mussels, roasted calamari, or eggplant, and freshly made flatbreads. For dessert, the decadent pistachio bomboloni and a limoncellomisu with fresh berries provide playful twists on beloved classics.
Guests can also enjoy an expertly crafted cocktail menu by Head Mixologist Jonathan Makonga. Try the signature Green Goddess or share a jug of sangria bursting with fresh fruit—a perfect match for the relaxed garden ambiance.
To celebrate the flavours of South Africa, Mount Nelson collaborates with renowned local suppliers like Farmer Angus from Spier for charcuterie and eggs, and Meuse Farm for organic vegetables and flowers. Many herbs are sourced from the hotel’s very own chef’s garden, adding a homegrown touch to each dish.
Saturday Braai
Every Saturday, from 12:00 to 15:00, Saturday Braai brings the quintessential South African tradition to life at Oasis. Set on the poolside lawn under the fragrant haze of wood smoke, this outdoor feast is a celebration of local heritage and the country’s love for braai.
Guests gather around the braai as wood-fired cooking takes centre stage. Enjoy South Africa’s best-loved braai favourites—Boerewors Rolls, succulent beef cuts, and grilled shellfish—paired with traditional sides like Samp and Beans, Potato Salad, Mealie Pap, and Braai Broodjies. Finish your meal with nostalgic Afrikaans koeksisters, Cape Malay koesisters, Malva Pudding bites, and Peppermint Crisp. Refresh yourself with cold craft beers or local wines, all accompanied by live acoustic music.
A New Era of Culinary Heritage
These new offerings infuse Mount Nelson’s timeless elegance with modern flair, embracing the cultural richness that defines South Africa’s culinary landscape. Recently named Best Hotel in Africa and ranked No. 28 on the 2024 World’s 50 Best Hotels list, Mount Nelson’s evolving food scene underscores its reputation as an iconic destination. Whether you’re a local or a visitor from afar, Mount Nelson’s new culinary experiences promise unforgettable moments that bring together heritage, flavour, and a dash of joy.
Saturday Braai is available weekly from 12:00 to 15:00. The Fountain by Planet Bar, now open, welcomes guests seven days a week for lunch and dinner starting at 12:00.
