Nestled in the serene Franschhoek Valley, Eleven Restaurant is nothing short of a culinary gem. Named after its location on Huguenot Street, Eleven embodies the dream of globe-trotting chef-proprietor Ryan Shell, who envisioned a dining destination that celebrates global contemporary cuisine with a touch of artistic finesse.
I was fortunate enough to get a taste of what they have on their menu. Despite being a newbie in town at the time – only opening its doors in August 2023 – it was clear that meticulous planning went into every detail, from the decor to the divine meals they serve.
Upon entering Eleven, guests are greeted warmly, which immediately sets the stage for a remarkable time between the four walls of the restaurant. The staff exude passion for their craft, ensuring every guest feels welcomed and cared for throughout their dining experience. Got a question about the menu or need a recommendation? You can count on the waitering staff to be at the ready to meet all your needs. It’s the little things…
Drawing from his extensive culinary background, which includes prestigious eateries in the UK and top restaurants in Southern Africa, Chef Ryan curates a menu that reflects his passion for locally sourced, hyper-seasonal ingredients. Each dish is a masterpiece, carefully crafted to showcase the vibrant flavours of the season.
Visitors can expect a variety of delicious dishes to choose from out of their three menus (lunch menu, 3-course menu, tasting menu). Fairview goats’ cheese starters, succulent Karoo Lamb ribs, pan seared yellowtail and Parmesan are only some of the mouth-watering meals available.
Each dish that I tried was a real treat, from starter to dessert. The Valrhona mousse dessert stole my heart. Its velvety smoothness and rich chocolatey flavour offered a sweet conclusion to an extraordinary meal.
With its talented chef, attentive staff, and exquisite menu, Eleven promises a dining experience that is both memorable and satisfying, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking culinary excellence in Franschhoek.
