    The origins of Sloppy Sam trace back nearly a century when it first opened its doors as a milk bar. Over time, the restaurant changed hands, with a Greek family introducing their cuisine to the menu, blending the flavours of the Mediterranean with the local palate. It wasn’t until 1984 that Hooman Saffarian, with his deep-rooted Persian heritage, took over the establishment, bringing his unique touch to the already diverse menu.

    “When I first took over Sloppy Sam, it was a challenging time,” Hooman recalls. “The restaurant industry was tough, and it required long hours and hard work, especially with a young family. But knowing how to adapt and think on your feet is a must in this business.”

    Hooman’s journey with Sloppy Sam has been marked by his ability to embrace change while staying true to the restaurant’s core values. Under his stewardship, Sloppy Sam has seamlessly blended Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences, creating a unique culinary experience that he fondly describes as “Medi-Midi.”

    The essence of Sloppy Sam

    Despite the challenges, Sloppy Sam has thrived, becoming a landmark in Cape Town. The restaurant has witnessed significant milestones, from South Africa’s victory in the 1995 Rugby World Cup to the electric atmosphere of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, where the previous location in Green Point buzzed with excitement.

    Hooman’s pride in Sloppy Sam’s enduring legacy is palpable. “We’ve been open during big South African moments, and it’s incredible to see how people come together to celebrate over great food,” he shares.

    The restaurant’s menu is a testament to its rich history and Hooman’s culinary expertise. Signature dishes like the Kleftiko-style lamb and pan-fried calamari have been staples for years, drawing in third-generation customers who return for the familiar flavors. The menu also features an array of Middle Eastern mezze, from dolmades served with thick Greek yoghurt to marinated green olives, hummus with fresh chilli, and pickled octopus—all accompanied by warm, toasty naan.

    One dish that stands out is the Turkish Borek, a crispy phyllo pastry filled with cheese, chickpea flour, and chilli, deep-fried to golden perfection. Hooman’s Saffron Chicken Kebabs, basted in a Persian saffron and cream sauce, are another crowd favorite, showcasing his Persian heritage.

    A personal touch

    Hooman’s personal connection to the menu is evident in his favorite dishes. “I really enjoy the loaded hummus, topped with finely chopped salad and crumbled Feta cheese, as well as our roasted lamb neck,” he says. “And if you haven’t tried our famous lamb riblets—do you even live in Cape Town?”

    Over the years, Sloppy Sam has adapted to the changing times, moving locations from Three Anchor Bay to Somerset Road in Green Point, and then to Hudson Street in De Waterkant before finding its current home in Heritage Square. Each move has brought new challenges, but also new opportunities to connect with a loyal customer base that spans generations.

    What truly sets Sloppy Sam apart is the warmth and hospitality that Hooman brings to every interaction. Whether he’s in the kitchen perfecting a dish or greeting guests at the door, his genuine passion for food and people shines through.

    “The restaurant industry has changed a lot since I first started, but the energy around food and dining out is better than ever,” Hooman reflects. “It’s a tough business, but seeing people enjoy the food and the atmosphere makes it all worth it.”
