• If you are a huge foodie who loves exploring various cuisines from different cultures, then you have most definitely heard of tofu. Tofu is versatile and a great addition to many meals whether served in your favourite broth or noodle dish.

Although diverse in cooking, very often regular tofu lovers talk about the struggle of getting the chewy white block to the right consistency, ending with a result that is either too soggy or soft.

We offer tips on preparing your tofu.

     What is tofu:

Tofu is a form of soy milk that is condensed and then pressed into a firm square shape. Originally from China, tofu is said to be high in both protein and essential amino acids.

How to properly prepare and cook tofu:

Make sure to choose the correct tofu:

    • Firm TofuIf the tofu is either firm or extra firm, his type works well for dishes like stir fry or grilled foods. Firm tofu is good at holding shape.
    • Silken tofu: This type of tofu is well suited to soups, desserts and smoothies. The consistency is softer which works well for blending.

Note: A great alternative if you’re looking for something that will add a rich texture and is dairy-free.

    Pressing the tofu :

    • Make sure that the tofu is pressed. This will help with removing any excess moisture. Removing the moisture allows for the tofu to absorb more flavour whilst cooking, giving it a better texture.
    • Once pressed, place the tofu between a paper towel or clean cloth. Place a heavy object on top of the tofu for 15-30 minutes.

Note: Make sure the heavy object placed on top of the tofu is not too heavy causing it to break (using pan or plate would be considered too heavy)

    • If the tofu is extra firm, only press it for 15-20 minutes.
    • Make sure that all the excess water is removed. If not, the tofu will crumble during the cooking process. It will also make the crisping of the tofu hard.

    Marinating your Tofu:

    • Tofu is very absorbent, very similar to a sponge. We recommend marinating your tofu in various seasonings for 30 minutes or overnight for the ultimate result.

Note: Seasoning options include ginger, soy sauce, garlic or any of your choice

Using Cornstarch for Extra Crispiness :

    • Toss tofu cubes in a bit of cornstarch before frying or baking. This creates a crispy outer layer while keeping the inside tender.

    Storing Tofu

    • If you don’t use the entire block, store the remaining tofu in water in an airtight container in the fridge. Change the water daily, and it will stay fresh for up to a week.
