Cake Canteen is a slice of sweet paradise that was brought to life by Jandri van Zyl, founder of The Velvet Cake Co. Jandri took hands with Nikki Symons from Sweet LionHeart, a supplier to Cake Canteen, to create what many would dub the best cake in the Cape. The bakery offers a unique style showcasing sweet treats from various businesses such as Grumpy & Runt, Sweet Lionheart, Hoghouse Brewing Company, and the Velvet Cake Co. The collaboration brings attention to talented bakers and breweries in Cape Town.
Entrepreneur Jandri van Zyl gives insight into her latest project, The Cake Canteen, whilst offering advice to future bakers and entrepreneurs. Her journey reflects patience in organic growth and inspires one to trust in your creative capabilities. Cake Canteen represents not only passion and love for providing its customers with innovative sweet treats but also gives people hope that one’s talents can result in something both rare and delicious.
Hi Jandri! Please tell us about yourself.
I am a passionate entrepreneur with 12 years of experience in the food and baking industry. I’ve always had a love for creating beautiful things and bringing them to customers in an innovative way. I started my first business at 25 and grew organically from there. The Velvet Cake Co. is my main business, of which I am very proud, and Cake Canteen is my latest venture.
Tell us more about Cake Canteen. What was the inspiration behind it?
Cake Canteen is a brainchild of mine to bring customers all things sweet and amazing under one roof in a beautiful space. The canteen counter is curated by The Velvet Cake Co. and includes delicious treats from Sweet LionHeart, Hoghouse Brewing Company, Grumpy & Runt, and of course, The Velvet Cake Co. The inspiration behind Cake Canteen was a desire for collaboration over competition, creating a space where cake enthusiasts can indulge in delicious treats while experiencing a unique blend of our signature styles.
How did you know you wanted to become a business owner?
As a creative person without a specific niche, I had to craft something out of nothing that did not exist. As someone who has always been passionate about the food industry and entrepreneurship, becoming a business owner felt like a natural progression. I saw an opportunity to turn my love for creating something out of nothing into a successful venture, and I haven’t looked back since.
