After nearly 30 years of welcoming guests from across the globe, The Table Bay Hotel, one of Sun International’s most cherished properties, has officially closed its doors to go on an exciting transformation. As of February 15, the hotel entered its next phase, preparing for a major refurbishment that will see it reopen as InterContinental Table Bay, Cape Town, in December 2025.
Under the management of Sun International, and in partnership with the V&A Waterfront (Pty) Ltd, the property owner and developer, the hotel will join the renowned IHG Hotels & Resorts family, one of the world’s leading hotel groups. This new chapter promises to elevate the hotel’s offerings while maintaining its trademark warmth and hospitality.
A Fond Farewell to an Iconic Era
General Manager Joanne Selby reflects on the bittersweet moment: “Our last guests checked out on Saturday, marking the end of an unforgettable chapter. As we pack up cherished memories, it’s with a mixture of nostalgia and excitement for what lies ahead. This isn’t goodbye – it’s au revoir. When we reopen, the heart of The Table Bay will remain the same: our incredible staff, whose dedication has made this hotel feel like home to so many.”
In a nod to the hotel’s enduring spirit, Selby assures guests that the same loyal team will be back to welcome visitors for the grand reopening. “We’ve hosted guests who first visited as children, then returned with their families. Many have formed deep connections with us, making The Table Bay a second home. While the hotel’s appearance will change, its soul — the people — will remain unchanged.”

A Legacy of World-Class Hospitality
Since its grand opening in May 1997, graced by none other than Nelson Mandela, The Table Bay has become a symbol of elegance and excellence. From royalty and rock stars to world leaders and sports legends, including the famous Barmy Army in 2016, the hotel has hosted some of the most remarkable guests in the world.
Reflecting on this proud legacy, Sun International CEO Anthony Leeming shared: “For nearly three decades, The Table Bay has been a cornerstone of world-class hospitality. While this marks the end of an era, we are excited for the next chapter. Together with IHG and the V&A Waterfront, we are honored to be part of the transformation, ensuring an even greater experience for our future guests.”
The Future: A Spectacular New Chapter
The revamped InterContinental Table Bay, Cape Town, will offer 306 beautifully designed rooms and suites, each providing breathtaking views of Table Mountain, the harbour, and the Atlantic Ocean. Guests will continue to enjoy direct access to the vibrant V&A Waterfront, renowned for its world-class shopping, dining, and entertainment. It remains a top destination for millions of visitors each year.
As one chapter closes, a thrilling new one begins — promising an even more spectacular future for this Cape Town icon.
