Moedi Wines, a pioneering African wine brand founded by Lesego Serolong Holzapfel, is poised to make a significant impact at ProWein 2024 in Düsseldorf, Germany. This female-owned venture not only introduces premium South African wines on a global scale but also places a strong emphasis on sustainability, African heritage, and community empowerment through beekeeping.
As South Africa marks 30 years of democracy and commemorates 365 years of its flourishing wine industry employing over a quarter million people, Holzapfel reflects on the progress made. “In 1994, it was nearly impossible for black wine producers to participate in ProWein, and yet here we are,” she notes.
Despite challenges, South Africa has emerged as the sixth-largest global wine exporter, reaching 440 million liters in 2022. Holzapfel envisions further growth in wine exports, emphasising the collaborative efforts of both black and white winemakers crafting world-class wines.
At ProWein 2024, Moedi introduces three single varietals – Chenin Blanc, Mourvèdre Rosé, and Shiraz – sourced from the renowned Swartland region. Known for producing rich, complex, and easily drinkable wines, these offerings will soon be available in South Africa, the United States, the Netherlands, and Denmark.
Moedi’s distinctiveness lies not only in its quality wines but also in its commitment to sustainability and social impact. Holzapfel, originally from the North West province, focuses on rural livelihoods. Her Bokamoso enterprises, winning two prestigious South African National Presidential Awards in 2023, embody social enterprise excellence.

The brand name “Moedi,” meaning ‘a stream of water’ in Setswana, reflects Holzapfel’s belief in the life-bringing qualities of wine and honey. Moedi Wines not only tantalise the palate but also supports honey farmers and funds scholarships for orphans in rural villages, with 10% of profits donated.
Moedi’s collaboration with Black Elephant Vintners & Co. resulted in the creation of the Black Elephant Vintners X Moedi Wines Cap Classique Black Bee Brut. This wine, receiving a honey infusion, symbolises unity and celebrates the strengths arising from diverse talents and cultures.
Highlighting the importance of bees as pollinators and their role in biodiversity, Moedi actively empowers rural beekeepers. The partnership with Black Elephant Vintners & Co. has led to the creation of over 1,000 hives, providing training and fair wholesale prices for honey.
Holzapfel’s impact extends beyond wine; she co-founded Raise the Children International, a non-profit providing scholarships to orphans with leadership potential. Since 2012, the organisation has supported 176 scholars in accessing quality education.
