• The Curry Café, a beloved staple at the Newlands Cricket Ground for 27 years, has closed its doors, leaving its loyal patrons and owner, Gasina Waggie-Isaacs, reflecting on an era that has ended.

The closure follows recent revamp work at the stadium. Despite Waggie-Isaacs’ hopes of relocating her business, no alternative space was offered. Speaking to EWN, she described the end as abrupt, saying: ‘It was an abrupt end, I will admit.’

Waggie-Isaacs shared her disappointment: ‘I think I should’ve been offered another location because 27 years is a long time. For me, it was tradition and a lifetime.’

The Curry Café had long been celebrated for its authentic, flavourful dishes, even earning praise in a past review by Eat Out, which highlighted its status as a treasured institution.

While her chapter at the cricket ground has ended, Waggie-Isaacs continues to serve her signature curries through a cooking company that delivers lunches to businesses and private events for eight or more people, according to Primedia+.

Fans of the Curry Café can still enjoy the flavours that made it a tradition in Cape Town, keeping the legacy alive beyond the stadium.
