Season 4 of The Great South African Bake Off has come to an end on Thursday evening (11 October 2023). It was nothing short of a showstopper season, with fantastic hosts Lesego Tlhabi and Glen Biderman-Pam leading the season through weeks of baking up a storm and the dynamic duo, Siba Mtongana and Paul Hartmann, judging 12 of SA’s best amateur bakers. The winner has finally been crowned… Mia Steenekamp is the person to walk away with the prize of a Prue Leith Patisserie Diploma six-month pastry course, and three-day Valrhona course in Paris.
The season finale kicked off on an emotional note. The top three, Chikomborero ‘Chiko’ Chiobvu, Mariza Mundow and Mia received words of encouragement from friends and family members. The heartfelt moments continued as the finalists went on to congratulate, encourage and support each other before their last bout of challenges. It is evident that these three have built a strong bond and genuinely root for one another.
It was a nail-biting episode, with the finalists giving it their very best in each challenge. The judges commended the top three for their exceptional baking skills that continued to blow them away week after week.
In the episode, Mia described the competition as “a rollercoaster”. While she didn’t excel in the first challenge, she wowed the judges in the second and third rounds. The Experience Design Director says her game plan for the final was to play on her strengths, with a dash of ‘unconventional.’ Her strategy clearly paid off and she can now proudly call herself SA’s best amateur baker.
