Weltevrede is a family-owned wine estate in the Robertson Valley, South Africa. Wine farming has been an integral part of the Jonker family tradition for four generations. It began when Klaas Jonker purchased the farm in 1912 and planted the first vineyards. He was followed by Japie Jonker, who in 1933 began wine farming on Weltevrede and Lourens Jonker who began with bottling on the estate. Today, the tradition is carried out by current owner and winemaker, Philip Jonker.
Old and new come together in this family brand which seeks to inspire and give consumers experiences of wine and wine lifestyle. The traditional style is expressed in our quality and authenticity and love of stories, but Weltevrede lives to be relevant, bringing new innovations in some collections as well as focusing on upliftment in our society. The name ‘Weltevrede’ in Afrikaans means ‘Well satisfied’ or ‘to be content’ and this is the feeling we wish to leave with every customer who opens a bottle of Weltevrede wine.
Having recently passed the 100 year history mark of family winemaking at Weltevrede, time was taken to reflect on what exactly it is that makes this patch of land so special. With the realisation that the terroir equation of the land included more than just ancient geology and specific climate, but also the many generations of people who have lived on and worked this land for more than a century, honour is given with this wine to these people, their hard work and values, their dreams, passions and preferences.
This is what has been bottled as the WELTEVREDE1912 collection. Instead of putting the signature of the winemaker on the label, the label bears the name of every person living at and working in the vineyards and winery of Weltevrede.
The WELTEVREDE1912 Chardonnay Vintage 2016 is full-bodied displaying a light golden colour. An intense mixture of dried mango, ripe pear and hints of ginger display on the nose whilst the palate reveals flavours of ripe lemons and marmalade.
With an intense mixture of berries and spice on the nose, the WELTEVREDE1912 Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage 2016 is full-bodied showing complex flavours of blue- and blackberries, pomegranate, white pepper and cedar on the palate.
