• Eid al-Fitr is more than just a celebration; it’s one of life’s big moments of joy, gratitude and connection with loved ones. Across homes, the heart of Eid lies in welcoming family and friends with beautifully prepared tea tables overflowing with treats. At the centre of this tradition is the art of baking, where simple ingredients transform into delicious creations that make big things happen, such as memories, joy and unity.

Saadiyah Hendricks is honouring tradition through baking

For Saadiyah Hendricks (@sadiesbubbleofyum), baking for Eid al-Fitr goes beyond the kitchen. It’s an annual ritual that turns simple acts into treasured memories. Growing up, she and her mother would spend weeks pouring their hearts into creating treats for their guests. Each biscuit tray became a collection of stories, traditions and dreams. Among all the delectable treats, one biscuit captured Saadiyah’s heart: the Spice Slice.

The Spice Slice Biscuit is no ordinary treat; it’s the flavour of nostalgia, the essence of the occasion, and a family heirloom passed through generations. Infused with warm cinnamon, mixed spice, and ground cloves, this cherished recipe is brought to life with the magic of Royal Baking Powder, a key ingredient for achieving its light and crumbly texture.

In her  baking video, Saadiyah invites us into her kitchen, sharing how baking Spice Slice Biscuits is a way to honour tradition and create meaningful moments. As she rolls out the dough and decorates the biscuits with white chocolate and pistachios, she reminds us that baking isn’t just about ingredients but the love poured into every step.

    Spice Slice Biscuit Recipe

By Saadiyah Hendricks  Serves: 20-24 biscuits

    Ingredients

    • 250g butter
    • 50g castor sugar
    • 1 egg
    • 4 tablespoons cornstarch
    • 1 teaspoon Royal Baking Powder (for that perfect light texture!)
    • 1 cup flour (add more if needed)
    • 1 teaspoon mixed spice
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1 teaspoon ground cloves

    Instructions

    1

Cream the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy for five minutes.

    2

Add the egg and beat until thoroughly combined.

    3

Sift in the dry ingredients (including the Royal Baking Powder), then fold gently to combine. If needed, add more flour to form a soft dough.

    4

Roll the dough into a log, cover it with cling wrap, and chill it in the fridge for at least an hour.

    5

Preheat the oven to 180°C and prepare a baking tray with parchment paper.

    6

Remove the cling wrap, slice the dough, and place the biscuits on the baking sheet with space between them. Bake for 12 minutes, then let the biscuits cool completely.

    7

Decorate as desired — Saadiyah drizzles hers with melted white chocolate mixed with ground cinnamon and tops them with chopped pistachios.
